Wedding dresses are typically bright red with elaborate gold embroidery featuring dragons and phoenixes, symbolizing the balance of male and female energy. The color white, conversely, is associated with mourning and funerals. This cultural difference extends beyond weddings. Red envelopes containing money are given during Chinese New Year and other celebrations. The preference for red is so strong that during the Chinese New Year, people wear red clothing, decorate homes with red paper cuttings, and even paint their front doors red to ward off evil spirits and attract good luck.
