China Uses Only One Time Zone for Its Entire Country

Despite spanning roughly the same area as the continental United States, which has four time zones, China operates on a single time zone: Beijing Time. This means the sun rises at vastly different local times across the country, with western regions experiencing sunrise hours after the east.

More detail

China is the third largest country in the world by land area, stretching across five geographical time zones. Yet in 1949, the Communist government unified the entire nation under Beijing Time to promote national unity and simplify administration. The result is a temporal oddity where in western Xinjiang, the sun might not rise until 10 AM Beijing Time, while workers in the far east are already well into their day. Some regions unofficially observe local time for practical purposes, but all official business, transportation schedules, and television broadcasts follow Beijing Time. It is one of the few countries of its size to maintain such temporal uniformity.
