Chinese White Dolphins Are Often Pink

Despite their name, Chinese white dolphins are frequently bright pink or albino in appearance. They are born dark grey and gradually lighten as they mature, with the pink coloration becoming more pronounced in adulthood. The pink hue results from overdeveloped blood vessels near the skin surface that help with thermoregulation. These dolphins inhabit the Pearl River Delta and surrounding waters, where they face threats from habitat loss, pollution, and boat traffic. Also known as Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, they are considered a symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture. Their population has declined dramatically, making conservation efforts critical for their survival.
