Norway Has the World's Deepest Underwater Lake

Deep beneath the waves of the Gulf of Mexico lies a lake within the ocean. Discovered by Norwegian researchers, this underwater brine pool is a lake of super-saline water that is so dense it does not mix with the surrounding seawater. Located about 3,300 feet below the surface, these underwater lakes have their own shorelines and even waves. The extreme salinity creates a toxic environment where only specialized bacteria can survive.
