More detail

The Great Barrier Reef is so massive that astronauts can see it from the International Space Station. Stretching over 1,400 miles along Australia's northeast coast, it is the world's largest coral reef system and the only living structure visible from space. Composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands, it is roughly the size of Italy or Japan. The reef is home to an incredible diversity of life.
