Russia and the USA Are Only 2.4 Miles Apart at Closest Point
The Diomede Islands in the Bering Strait put Russia and Alaska within shouting distance of each other.
More detail
Despite being on opposite sides of the Cold War for decades, Russia and the United States are actually neighbors. The Diomede Islands in the Bering Strait sit just 2.4 miles apart, with Big Diomede belonging to Russia and Little Diomede to the USA. The International Date Line runs between them, meaning when it is Saturday on Little Diomede, it is already Sunday on Big Diomede. You could almost swim between the two superpowers.
