Mongol Horses Could Survive on Minimal Food and Water

The Mongol military machine was built around the Mongolian horse, a small but incredibly tough breed that was perfectly adapted to the harsh conditions of the steppe. These horses could survive on minimal food and water, grazing on whatever grass was available and going for days without water if necessary. Unlike the large war horses of European knights that required grain and extensive care, Mongol ponies were low-maintenance and could forage for themselves. Each Mongol warrior typically had several horses, allowing them to switch mounts and travel long distances without exhausting their animals. The horses were also a mobile food source, Mongol soldiers could drink their blood or milk in emergencies. This self-sufficiency gave the Mongols unmatched mobility, allowing them to strike targets hundreds of miles away with little logistical support, catching enemies completely by surprise.
