Mongol Women Held Significant Political Power and Rights

Mongol society was remarkably progressive regarding women rights compared to medieval Europe, China, and the Middle East. Mongol women could own property, manage businesses, initiate divorces, and participate in military campaigns. When men were away at war, women managed the household and herds, giving them practical authority. Some women even commanded troops in battle. After Genghis Khan death, his daughters and daughters-in-law played crucial roles in maintaining the empire. The most famous example is Mandukhai Khatun, who united the Mongols in the 15th century. Mongol princesses often ruled their own territories and had the power to make political decisions. This relative equality stemmed from the nomadic lifestyle where everyone contribution was essential for survival, and it persisted throughout the empire history.
