The Australian Shepherd Is Actually an American Breed

The Australian Shepherd is one of the most confusingly named dog breeds because it has nothing to do with Australia. The breed was actually developed in the United States in the 19th century, primarily in California and the Western states. The name comes from the Basque shepherds who immigrated to America via Australia, bringing their sheep and herding dogs with them. American ranchers were impressed by these working dogs and began breeding them, eventually developing the distinct Australian Shepherd we know today. Aussies became fixtures on the rodeo circuit and are closely associated with cowboy culture.
