The Basenji Does Not Bark But Can Yodel Instead

Known as Africas Barkless Dog, the Basenji is unique among canines for its inability to produce a typical bark. Instead of barking, these dogs make a variety of unusual vocalizations including yodels, screams, and chortles.

More detail

The Basenji is one of the most unusual dog breeds when it comes to vocalizations. Unlike virtually every other dog breed, Basenjis cannot produce a traditional bark due to the unique shape of their larynx. However, this does not mean they are silent dogs. Basenjis are quite capable of making noise and often communicate using a distinctive sound called a baroo, which resembles a yodel. They can also scream, whine, and make chortling noises. This vocal quirk, combined with their cat-like grooming habits and independent nature, makes the Basenji one of the most unique and ancient dog breeds, originally bred in Central Africa for hunting.
