The Puli Has Naturally Corded Hair That Looks Like Dreadlocks

The Hungarian Puli is instantly recognizable thanks to its distinctive coat of natural cords that resemble dreadlocks. These cords form naturally as the puppy coat transitions to adult fur and can reach all the way to the ground.

More detail

The Puli is one of the most visually striking dog breeds in the world, covered from head to tail in thick, naturally occurring cords. Unlike some breeds that require human intervention to create corded coats, the Puli cords form entirely on their own as the soft puppy coat mats together with the coarser adult coat. By the time a Puli is about two years old, the cords have fully formed and can grow long enough to drag on the ground. These cords serve a practical purpose, providing protection from harsh weather and predators. The breed has been a Hungarian herding dog for over 1000 years, and their unique appearance has earned them the nickname mop dog. Despite their wild appearance, they are agile and athletic herders.
