More detail
Ulysses S. Grant loved horses and loved speed. The Civil War hero turned president had a habit of racing his horse through the streets of Washington D.C. at dangerous speeds. Police officers repeatedly stopped him, but Grant would simply show his presidential credentials and ride on. Finally, one officer had enough and arrested the president. Grant paid a $20 fine and promised to slow down. He did not. The arrests continued throughout his presidency.
