Imelda Marcos Family Owned Real Estate in Upscale Manhattan
The Marcos family invested millions in New York real estate, purchasing numerous properties in upscale Manhattan. Some of these were later sold by the Philippine government to recover stolen wealth.
More detail
While ruling the Philippines, the Marcos family was quietly building a real estate empire in one of the world's most expensive cities. Documents found in the presidential palace showed how the family moved millions of dollars into Swiss bank accounts and numerous properties in upscale Manhattan. The investments included luxury apartments and commercial buildings in prime New York locations. After the Marcoses were overthrown in 1986, the Presidential Commission on Good Government began selling these properties to recover some of the estimated $10 billion plundered during their reign. The Manhattan real estate was just one part of a global portfolio that included homes in the US, Philippines, and other countries.
