Hot water can freeze faster than cold water
The Mpemba effect describes the phenomenon where hot water sometimes freezes faster than cold water under the same conditions. First formally described by Tanzanian student Erasto Mpemba in 1963, the effect is real but its precise cause is still debated — proposed explanations include hydrogen bond restructuring and enhanced convection currents.
