Lead Paint Poisoned Generations of Children

Lead-based paint was widely used in homes for decades, causing brain damage in millions of children before being banned in many countries.

More detail

Lead-based paint was used extensively in homes and buildings throughout the 20th century because it was durable, washable, and provided bright colors. However, as the paint aged, it would chip and create dust that children inhaled or ingested. Lead is a potent neurotoxin that causes permanent brain damage, reduced IQ, behavioral problems, and learning disabilities in children. By the time the dangers were fully recognized, millions of homes were contaminated. Despite being banned in the United States in 1978, lead paint remains in millions of older homes. Children living in these homes continue to be poisoned by peeling paint and contaminated dust, with the effects lasting a lifetime.
