Every Modern Racehorse Descends From Just Three Arabian Stallions
All Thoroughbred racehorses alive today can trace their bloodlines back to just three horses imported to Britain in the late 17th and early 18th centuries: the Darley Arabian, the Godolphin Arabian, and the Byerley Turk.
More detail
The entire Thoroughbred breed descends from three foundation sires brought to England between 1680 and 1720. The Darley Arabian, imported in 1704, is the most significant ancestor, contributing to roughly 95% of modern male Thoroughbred lines. The Godolphin Arabian, originally from Yemen, and the Byerley Turk, captured in battle, complete the trio. Wealthy British breeders imported these Arabian horses specifically to create faster, stronger, and more athletic racing stock. Every Kentucky Derby winner, every Triple Crown champion, and every horse racing today carries the genes of at least one of these three stallions.
