The Great Wall Is Not a Continuous Line

The Great Wall of China is actually a complex network of fortifications rather than a single continuous barrier. Built over two millennia by various dynasties, it includes main walls, side walls, enclosing walls, and parallel walls in some areas. In places where steep mountains or wide rivers provided natural defense, no wall was built at all. The wall's path zigzags across northern China, following terrain that offered strategic advantages. Different sections were constructed using different materials depending on local availability, ranging from rammed earth and stone to bricks. This modular construction explains why some sections have survived better than others. The total length of all wall sections combined exceeds 21,000 kilometers, making it the longest human-made structure ever built.
